Seashells can be found on every shore of the world. They come in different shapes, colour and sizes. because they are fragile, they often arrive broken on our shore through being tumbled in the ocean.The bigger the shell, the stronger and thicker it will be. The smaller fragments of shells become part of the sand thet forms the seabed.
Seashells will have different colours, depending on their size, specie and the temperature of the waters they have come from.
Once the top layer of the shell has been ground and polished, it is known as Mother of Pearl
Mother of Pearl has been used by the Chinese and Japanese for centuries as inlay in furniture and decorative objects such as hair brushes, fans, combs to name but a few.
In our store Wynrae handmade jewelry we use the mother of pearl as a pendant centre piece
or to enhance precious metal or gemstones. They are beautifully fashioned into necklaces, pendants or earrings.
We also combine the Mother of Pearl with another shell, the Abalone shell, known as Paua in New Zealand. This particular shell is different from most other shells because of its beautiful green/ blue colour with hints of pink. It is particularly strinking in New Zealand where the waters of the South Island are very cold, giving the shell a much deeper and richer green colour.

Hello again everyone!

I have just come back from a two week holiday in Australia. Had a great time, but now it is back to work.

New Zealand is a nation of DIY people.They have a hands on attitude with any project they undertake. Whether it be building their home, making furniture or anything else.

This is why New Zealand is full of crafts people. From wood , bone and jade carving to handmade jewelry, you will find these crafts displayed in numerous craft markets around the country.

Following in the New Zealand tradition, we are happy to bring to you our handmade jewelry .

Because New Zealand is a small country and quite isolated from the rest of the world, we have not been too exposed to the current designs and fashion, and have therefore developed our own unique designs. We use some of our natural resources such as the New Zealand Paua shell , better known as Abalone shell to the rest of the world.

We combine these shells with beautiful beads, which we import to produce stunning, elegant, unique and totally handmade jewelry.

Handmade Abalone pendants

The Abalone seashell of New Zealand is known by its Maori name : Paua. Its colors are richer and deeper than the Abalone shells in other countries. This is because we use the shells that come from the bottom of the South Island of New Zealand where the waters are very cold. To bring out the beautiful almost metallic colors, the shell is ground down to reveal the glorious greens and blues. The shell can be cut to various shapes and can also be dyed in different colours. All our jewelry is handmade and therefore no two pieces are exactly alike.
